RPM: Resistance, Play & Misbehaviour

We live in an era of revolutions per minute. From politics and fashion to tech trends and pop culture, the daily pace is breakneck.

To remain relevant and productive in this context requires swift ingenuity and steadfast faith in the political promise of architecture to shape culture and enhance civic life. The engine that drives PARTISANS is our own version of RPM: resistance, play, and misbehaviour.

At PARTISANS, we are always seeking new ways to make the improbable possible. Every project poses resistances—challenging conditions that threaten to derail the vision. Instead of ducking, we embrace those resistances head on to push our design thinking to extremes and generate unconventional solutions.

We never lose sight of the importance of play—the sheer pleasure of design, but also play as methodology: the creative exploration of possibility, invention, and artistic practice to rewrite the rules of architectural engagement.

Misbehaviour isn’t a moral aberration; it’s the productive tension between resistance and play that thrusts research, thinking, and art into unchartered territories. Misbehaviour is the spark of difference, the slight tilt or mutation that unleashes beauty and reinvents the norm.

Alexander Josephson: Today's Notable Young Entrepreneur BY NOTABLE

Last week Alexander Josephson, Principal at our firm, was mention as Today's Notable Young Entrepreneur in an article by Notable.  "Alexander Josephson is the co-founder of Toronto-based architecture collective PARTISANS , which is being named this year’s Best Emerging Practice at tonight’s Ontario Association of Architects awards. The company is hitting Toronto by storm with the recently unveiled Gaudi-esque Bar Raval and new projects in the works including the interior fit out of Union Station – one of the largest civic infrastructure re-developments in the world, among other notable projects.", check this article out to know more about Alex and PARTISANS.

Pieces of Raval

One of the most challenging things about designing Bar Raval was making the panels that together create the voluptuous forms inside the space. Each panel was treated as a an individual sculpture, possessing a unique shape and texture.

Designing Raval

Bar Raval is now open and has been receiving rave reviews! Today we look at the artifacts of the design process. Precedent collages, fluid sketches with fat markers on tracing paper, digital modeling, technical drawings, and numerous prototypes (of the drip tray, window screen, and the mahogany woodwork) round out the collection of work that has accumulated on our walls over the past few months.

Wallpaper, "Ahead of the Curve"

PARTISANS'  Grotto sauna project has just been featured in Wallpaper Magazine! This is the first time the Grotto project has been published, and it features gorgeous photos by PARTISANS' own, Jonathan Friedman.  Read the article here.

"The sauna's sleek, angular burnt-cedar envelope echoes the silhouette of the main house. But inside, Partisan exercises its skill with complex, amorphous shapes."
