Rethinking Mecca is the culmination of three years of research into the history and architecture of the seat of Islam: the holy mosque and the Kabah black cube, at its center. Our scheme, for the global competition, is based on the founding act of Islam when Mohammed returned to Makkah from Medina and destroyed the idols stored within the Kabah, leaving the black cube itself as the last remaining idol. Indeed, it is still the center of the Hajj Pilgrimage. Our scheme asserts that the concept that God is the abstract and unknowable through Islam should be explored, thus we represent this with the absence of form and replace the black kabah with a point of singularity or impression in the earth.
