The Think Tank Office is a hybrid typology of form and function. Located in the heart of Toronto’s financial district on the 37th floor of the iconic Mies van der Rohe TD Tower, the Think Tank was inspired by the storied space as well as the client’s vision for a “workshop in the sky”—a potent tower space that inspires creativity and productivity.

An undulating waffle of Baltic birch plywood surfaces delineate the open-concept central studio space from a series of private offices, boardrooms, kitchen, and lounges along its edges. The continuous and flowing hedge of plywood dissolves the edges of the office layout, while an abundance of glass walls makes the otherwise tighter spaces feel open and generous. In true egalitarian fashion, every 50 square-foot private office is a “corner office,” each with a striking panoramic view of downtown Toronto.

We were also tasked with maximizing the space so that it could accommodate a greater number of people than other downtown offices typically do. By questioning and reimagining the conventional office design, the Think Tank successfully accommodates 40 people—more than double the average square area per employee.
